A man who spent his formative years in prison for murder is released, and struggles to adjust to the outside world and escape his lurid past. He gets involved with a cheap dancehall girl, and when her protector is accidentally killed, they go on the lam together, getting jobs as farm labourers. But some fellow workers get wise to them.

In 1831, Irishman Charles Adare travels to Australia to start a new life with the help of his cousin who has just been appointed governor. When he arrives he meets powerful landowner and ex-convict, Sam Flusky, who wants to do a business deal with him. Whilst attending a dinner party at Flusky's house, Charles meets Flusky's wife Henrietta who he had known as a child back in Ireland. Henrietta is an alcoholic and seems to be on the verge of madness.

The title of this Czech domestic drama translates loosely as A Suburban Romance. The heroine is a young, unmarried woman who finds herself a "little bit pregnant." She tries to hide this fact from her mother, but it isn't long before the truth is obvious. This is the main story; the rest of the film consists of brief character vignettes, illustrating the diversity of the neighborhood in which the girl lives. Refreshingly, Zizkowska Romance is free of political propaganda, which was the exception rather than the rule back in 1958. The film was one of Czechoslovakia's entries in that year's Cannes Film Festival.
